The History of Sparkhill
There are two schools of thought as to where the name Sparkhill comes from. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Sparke family were the most esteemed residents of the region. There is also however a stream – the Spark Brook - which flows through the area and is still popular with walkers and cyclists. Either way, the neighbourhood is located on the hill that lies above the stream. It was as a result of Birmingham’s expansion due to the industrial revolution that Sparkhill began to undergo real development.
Much of the new houses in the area were built along long, straight streets creating a distinctive pattern, and it continued to grow until in 1911 Sparkhill became part of Birmingham proper. One of its biggest employers was the BSA factory which was targeted by German bombers in the war resulting in the destruction of several homes and buildings in the area.
