Sheldon, located in the constituency of Yardley, lies approximately six miles to the southeast of Birmingham city centre. It covers an area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) and in the 2011 census had a population of 21,817.
The History of Sheldon
Though reference to Sheldon, in the form of Machitone (Macca’s Farm) appears in the Doomsday Book, the area was very rural and undeveloped until relatively recently. In 1821 the population was just 423, and in the century that followed, that figure only increased by 23 people.
In the 1930’s however development of the area began, with large housing developments being built in the Wells Green and Lyndon Green areas, and much of the housing in Sheldon today dates back to the 1930’s.

Sheldon doesn’t have its own train station, the nearest one being at Acocks Green, from where it takes less than ten minutes to reach Birmingham’s Snow Hill and Moor Street stations. The A45 Coventry Road runs through the area giving easy access to Coventry and Birmingham city centre. Sheldon is close to Birmingham Airport.
The area is served by the 60, 72, 72A, 73, 73S, 877, A10, X1 and X2 bus routes.

Sheldon is very well catered for in terms of amenities. There are a number of chemists, a Tesco and Aldi supermarket, a library and a very good selection of pubs, eateries and restaurants.
Things to do in and around Sheldon
Sheldon County Park is a delightful area covering more than 300 acres and boasting areas of mature woodland, fields and wetland. Other green spaces in the vicinity include Lyndon Park and Elmdon Park. Hatchford Brook Golf Club is nearby, as is Solihull’s Planet Ice.
