Olton is a village suburb located within the borough of Solihull. 4 miles from the centre of Solihull and a little under 6 from Birmingham city centre, it retains its own individual village like feel and character. The area, which in the 2011 census had a population of 12,167, has its very own motto – The Town in the Country.
The History of Olton
Olton comes from Old Town and is the site of the Ulverlei Manor, that eventually became Solihull. The settlement of the “Old Town” was named as such to distinguish it from Solihull, which was established at a junction of two roads a few miles away and became the new seat for the Lord of the Manor.
With the relocation it was Solihull that prospered, and Oulton remained very much as it was until the dual spurs of the building of St Bernard’s Road in the first quarter of the 19th century and the coming of the railway in 1869.
