The History of Hall Green

The Hamlet consists of 14 very distinctive villas, featuring huge chimneys and timbers. Sarehole Mill, one of only two working water mills in the whole of Birmingham, sits on the border of both Hall Green and Moseley. The mill, along with its neighbouring village of Sarehole, were the inspiration for its most famous resident J.R.R Tolkien when he created “The Shire” in his book The Hobbit and the Lord of The Rings trilogy.
Hall Green was also the home to the popular greyhound racing stadium and race course situated on York Road called Hall Green Stadium; which existed from 1927 until 2017. The stadium was closed by its owners Euro Property Investments Limited in July 2017 to make way for a housing estate.
