Erdington is located 5 miles (8 km) to the northeast of Birmingham city centre, Erdington is the name of both a suburb and a ward and was formerly part of Warwickshire. In the 2011 census, the ward of Erdington had a population of 22, 828.
The History of Erdington
Erdington can trace its history back to the Middle Ages. The village sprung up due to its proximity to both the River Tame and the “Ridgway”, a Roman Road that is now Chester Road. The village gradually grew over the centuries, with more and more of the infrastructure that comes with that put in place. By 1832, the population had grown to 2,000, and the railway station built in 1862 attracted further development and encouraged more people to move into the area.

Erdington is very well served in terms of transport. It has its own train station (Erdington), which is on the Cross-City Line, with services running between Lichfield and Redditch via Birmingham New Street.
The A38 runs along its southern border, and Junction 6 of the M6 is easily accessible. There are more than 20 bus routes that serve the area

The area has several pharmacies, as well as a handful of local grocery stores. There is a good selection of different eateries in the Erdington, catering for a wide variety of tastes.
Erdington’s library - Carnegie library – was opened in 1907 and is still going strong, though the Erdington Swimming Baths, which included a sauna complex were replaced in 2017 by a modern leisure centre complete with 25 metre swimming pool, gym and community area.

There are plenty of parks and green spaces around Erdington, including Pype Hayes Park (which also has a golf course), Witton Lakes Park, Brookvale Park, Perry Park and Sutton Park. Birmingham City centre itself, with its myriad of attractions and options is just a short train journey or bus/car ride away.
